If you aspire to the granny hair or mermaid hair trends, your hair is no stranger to bleach and constant dyeing to prevent brassiness. I have dark Asian hair with lots of red/orange undertones so it takes a few bleaching sessions to get it to a light platinum blonde (level 10) to dye it pastel colors or tone it gray. The main question I am asked is, doesn’t your hair get damaged from dyeing it every couple of weeks? Yes, it gets damaged except you can take care of your hair using inexpensive home remedies.
In order to keep your hair from turning into straw, you’re going to have to deep condition it weekly. You can spend a fortune on fancy treatments at the salon or you can deep condition your hair with coconut oil while doing housework or exercising.
Coconut oil is solid under 76 degrees and liquid when it’s warmer. If your coconut oil is solid, you will need to heat it. To start add 1 to 2 tablespoons coconut oil to a microwave safe bowl and heat for 45 secs. Stir the solid pieces until it’s all liquid, then add the coconut oil to your hair. It doesn’t need to be soaked, just coat the hair and comb the oil through. Put your hair up in a bun and leave it for a couple of hours. I use the time to do laundry or go for a long walk outside. This allows the sun let the coconut oil to penetrate your hair. After a couple of hours, you can wash it out using your favorite shampoo and conditioner.
If you have fine, thin hair, use only about a tablespoon and focus on the ends, try to keep the coconut oil away from your roots or your hair will be flat and greasy looking.
THICK COARSE HAIR
If you have thick, coarse hair start with 2 tablespoons of coconut oil and then coat the ends of your hair and comb it through. You can heat up more as needed. Try not to put so much, otherwise, it will be hard to wash out and it will feel gross…less is more.
*Use more if you have thick long hair
If your hair is especially damaged, you can cover your hair with a shower cap and condition overnight. Make sure to pin the shower cap in a couple of places so it doesn’t fall off in your sleep or put a towel over your pillow.
If you tried conditioning your hair with coconut oil, let me know how it went in the comments.
